Water Conservation

Water conservation is not just for drought! Australia has experienced some exceptionally dry periods during the past several years, and the word drought has brought out the water conservationist in all of us. It's important to remember that water conservation is not just for times of water shortage. Sound water use practices reduce the amount of stress that we place on our resources, both by limiting water withdrawals and by decreasing wastewater discharges. Conserving water reduces wear and tear on major infrastructure such as water and wastewater treatment plants and the distribution systems that deliver water to consumers, and can postpone or eliminate the need for making major investments in new infrastructure. Using less water helps us to become more flexible during times when there is a water shortage. Conserving water is simple and inexpensive!

Tips for saving water outside the  home  
 
Forty percent of total household water supply is used outside the home. Maryland’s water resources are daily sprinkled, squirted, dripped, gushed and often wasted outside the home. Follow these tips to reduce water use outdoors:

Landscape Irrigation

There are no assigned watering days, but never water more than three days a week. Lawn watering is not allowed  between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to prevent losing water to evaporation. For summer, we assume now water should be done between 10a.m. to 6 p.m..
Remember that each lawn is different, depending on the soil, amount of sunlight it receives and other landscaping factors. Use and follow right information for your landscape as a guideline, but experiment with your lawn. Try watering your lawn in cycles — five minutes on, five minutes off — to allow water to penetrate the soil and create a healthier lawn with less water. And try taking two minutes off the watering times for each zone. If that works and your lawn stays green, take off another two minutes.

  •     Install efficient irrigation systems such as drip irrigation, soil soakers, and efficient sprinkler systems
  •     Set sprinklers for lawn and garden only, don’t water the street or sidewalk
  •     Water the lawn only when the ground is dry and preferably no more than once a week: The amount of water used by a sprinkler in one hour is equal to the daily water needs of a family of four
  •     Water during the coolest part of the day (preferably morning) and never water on windy days: As much as 30% of water used can be lost to evaporation by watering lawn during midday
  •     Pull weeds to decrease competition for water
  •     Increase mowing height to 2-3 inches and apply mulch to both reduce evaporation and prevent weed growth
  •     Limit grass areas and use trees, shrubs, and other plants that require less water to landscape your yard: Grass turf requires 30-50% more water than shrubs and other groundcover

Other Outdoor Use 

  •     Repair or replace leaking hoses and sprinklers
  •     Always use an automatic shut-off nozzle on hoses
  •     Use a broom rather than a hose to clean decks, sidewalks, and other paved areas: 5 minutes of running the hose  uses 25 gallons of water
  •     Use drought tolerant landscape plants
  •     Collect rainwater for reuse in the garden whenever possible
  •     Cover pools to prevent evaporation: An average uncovered pool loses about an inch of water a week because of evaporation
